Majer Metal Works recently completed a remarkable project at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, Maryland. They fabricated and installed a custom steel stair with 30 perforated, 1/8″ thick powder-coated steel panels for the guard rail system. Ziger/Snead Architects designed the stair to fit in perfectly with MICA’s modern campus style. It showcases the precision and craftsmanship that Majer Metal Works brings to every project. The installation stands as a testament to the attention to detail that defines Majer Metal Works’ work.

About MICA

The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) is one of the best art and design colleges in the United States. MICA is a school in Baltimore that is famous for its new programs and for helping people be creative. The campus has old and new buildings, making it a fun place for students and visitors. The addition of this custom steel stair by Majer Metal Works further enhances the campus, blending functionality with artistic design to complement MICA’s vibrant atmosphere.

The Challenge and Reward of Interior Photography

Photographing interior projects like this one presents unique challenges and rewards. Capturing the space is crucial to show how custom pieces, like the steel stair, create harmony in the environment. The perforated steel panels add a modern touch, which needs highlighting without overpowering the overall aesthetic. Lighting, angles, and composition play key roles in showcasing the installation’s intricate details while maintaining the architecture’s integrity. A keen eye and the right approach ensure that each photograph reflects the craftsmanship and design intent.

Gear Used for Interior Photography

For this project, I used the Canon EOS 5D Mark III, a camera known for its outstanding image quality and reliability. I paired it with the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM lens, perfect for capturing wide-angle shots of architectural spaces. The lens’s wide aperture allowed me to focus on the intricate details of the custom steel stair while keeping the entire image sharp. This gear accurately depicted the craftsmanship and design intent behind Majer Metal Works’ installation at MICA.

“His kind directness makes working with him so easy.”

Working with Jiho is an unique experience. He is an extremely engaged photographer, and he works very hard to capture the most compelling images that a particular subject might provide. He doesn’t hold back, but he is also very particular, resulting in images with both quality and dynamism. His work ethic is impressive, and his care in treating people never falters. In addition to shooting images of work in our studio, he has taken images of completed work both after and during installation. In all circumstances, he has successfully engaged the people in the environment, making the process of shooting a difficult object in a busy place a special event rather than an imposition, and the results are visible in the quality of his work.

I would recommend Jiho for any project—his attention to the subject is just as careful when shooting a person, an inanimate object, or even a pile of tools in a messy studio. His kind directness makes working with him so easy.
