Rome, the Eternal City, invites you to step into a world where the past and present coexist in perfect harmony. Walking through its streets feels like living in a time capsule, with ancient ruins, grand churches, and charming details hidden in every corner. From the intricate patterns on historic buildings to the age-old water fountains tucked away in alleys, Rome is a city that delights on both a grand and intimate scale.
Via Appia Antica: Stepping Into History
One of Rome’s oldest roads, Via Appia Antica, offers a journey through time that dates back to 312 B.C. This ancient path is steeped in history, with significant events like St. Paul’s vision of Jesus and the crucifixion of Spartacus etched into its stones. To fully appreciate the grandeur of Via Appia Antica, dedicate a full day to explore its length. Unfortunately, we only managed to cover a fraction of it, but every step was a walk among history.
Getting there is simple. We hopped on the 218 bus from Piazza di S. Giovanni in Laterano and got off at the Fosse Ardeatine stop. Although the bus stops can be a bit unclear, a quick word with the driver ensured we didn’t miss our destination. As you wander along this historic road, remember to bring water, snacks, and a good pair of walking shoes. The journey through Via Appia Antica is as much about soaking in the surroundings as it is about uncovering the layers of history beneath your feet.
Catacombe di San Callisto: Unearthing Ancient Mysteries
No trip to Rome is complete without delving into its underground secrets. The Catacombe di San Callisto offers a fascinating glimpse into the city’s ancient Christian history. When I learned about this site, I felt like a kid in a candy store—anything involving archaeology and ruins is right up my alley! We were fortunate to join a small group led by Father Yeom, whose detailed explanations brought the catacombs to life.
However, a word of caution: photography inside the catacombs is strictly prohibited. Despite the temptation, it’s important to respect this rule and fully immerse yourself in the experience without distractions. Just a short walk away lies the Catacombe di San Sebastiano. Although we arrived too late to enter, the humble beauty of the church and the tomb of San Sebastiano still left a lasting impression.
Embracing Modern Rome: From Cappuccinos to Colosseum
During our explorations, we stumbled upon Sant’Antonio dei Portoghesi, a church we discovered by following the enchanting sound of organ music. Inside, the church was a golden marvel, filled with intricate details that dazzled us. The surprises didn’t stop there—Rome has a way of revealing its treasures when you least expect it.
In the heart of Piazza della Rotonda stands the Pantheon, a testament to Rome’s architectural genius. While the square is often crowded and the restaurants can be pricey, it remains an excellent spot for people-watching and capturing the essence of Rome’s vibrant life.
Practical Tips for a Smooth Roman Experience
Navigating Rome can be challenging, but with a few practical tips, you’ll be well-prepared. If you bank with Bank of America, take advantage of BNL D’Italia’s partnership, which offers favorable conversion rates. Save your money by skipping the tourist maps; instead, grab a free one from any major hotel.
When choosing a restaurant, avoid those with staff outside trying to lure in customers—they often cater to tourists. Instead, venture off the beaten path to discover authentic local flavors. Be cautious around major attractions like the Colosseum, where unofficial guides may try to offer their services. Stick to official vendors to avoid scams.
Finally, be mindful of pickpockets, a common concern in any major city. We opted for side bags instead of backpacks, keeping them close at all times to avoid any unfortunate incidents.
Rome is a city that effortlessly blends the ancient with the modern, offering a rich tapestry of experiences that captivate and inspire. Whether you’re walking along the historic Via Appia Antica, exploring the Colosseum, or simply enjoying a coffee, Rome invites you to discover its timeless beauty at every turn.
