Last month, I had the unique opportunity to photograph a poker night organized by a group called “The Golden Sperm.” This monthly gathering, made up of fathers from Baltimore’s Federal Hill neighborhood, brings together a tight-knit group of friends and competitors. The poker game took place in an office space, with about twenty participants attending. Poker Table Craft provided the Primus table, adding a touch of luxury to the event and setting the perfect stage for a night of fun.
Throughout the evening, the vibe was nothing short of fantastic. Players shifted between serious competition and lighthearted banter, making the atmosphere electric. Some were determined to claim every chip, while others simply enjoyed the game’s social aspect. Despite the competitive nature of poker, laughter and camaraderie filled the room. It was the kind of poker night that reminded me of how much joy these games can bring. Unfortunately, I’m neither a father nor a resident of Federal Hill. Otherwise, I would have loved to join this group every month. Experiencing the event firsthand made me appreciate the strong bonds these gentlemen share through their regular poker nights.
Gear Used to Capture the Poker Night
To document this lively poker night, I relied on my trusty Canon EOS 7D. For the wide shots that captured the entire room and the dynamic group interaction, I used the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM lens. It allowed me to frame the larger scenes and convey the atmosphere of the game. For more detailed shots, I switched to the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens. This lens helped me focus on the individual players, their expressions, and the action at the poker table. Together, these two lenses offered the versatility needed to capture both the broader setting and the small, significant moments. As the night went on, I found myself blending into the event, capturing authentic interactions without disturbing the flow of the game.
