There’s something unforgettable about finding a place that feels completely off the grid. Alstrom Point—perched high above Lake Powell—offers one of the most cinematic views in the American Southwest. Towering cliffs, endless skies, and water-carved canyons unfold in every direction. It’s the kind of spot that humbles you in silence and fills your memory card fast.
About Alstrom Point
Alstrom Point is a secluded spot located on the north side of Lake Powell, offering some of the most stunning views in the area. Situated in Kane County, Utah, and managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), it provides a panoramic overlook of the lake’s winding canyons and unique rock formations. This iconic viewpoint can only be reached by a rugged 4×4 vehicle, making the journey part of the adventure.
Unlike the more crowded areas of Lake Powell, Alstrom Point remains relatively untouched. The vastness and solitude you experience here are unparalleled, giving you a true sense of freedom and connection to nature. The sweeping vistas of Crosby Canyon, the clear skies, and the striking landscape make it a photographer’s dream.
A Hidden Treasure at Alstrom Point
At the top of Alstrom Point, we stumbled upon a plastic box tucked away among the rocks—a geocache left by fellow adventurers. Inside, there was a small notebook with a pen, some cash, a lighter, and even a joint, left behind as tokens of their journey. It felt like a small connection to others who had made the same rugged trek to this incredible spot. I was up there with my friend Dave—thanks, Dave, for bringing me here and sharing this unforgettable experience.
The Joy of Photographing Native Plants
While the vast landscapes of Alstrom Point are awe-inspiring, there’s also joy in capturing the small, intricate details of the native plants that thrive in this harsh desert environment. Getting up close with a camera allows you to appreciate the resilience and beauty of desert flora. From the delicate blooms of cacti to the unique textures of sagebrush, photographing these plants draws you into a world of curiosity and wonder. It’s a quiet, meditative practice that reminds you to appreciate the subtle, often overlooked aspects of nature that make this area so special.
The Value of Going Off the Beaten Path
Visiting places like Alstrom Point is a reminder of the value of traveling beyond the typical tourist destinations. By stepping off the beaten path, you get to experience nature in its raw, untouched form. The quiet, the space, and the pure beauty of such a place offer a different kind of relaxation—a deeper sense of escape. Whether you’re there to photograph the landscape or simply enjoy the peace, it’s these hidden gems that make travel truly memorable.
For me, standing alone in such vastness, I finally understood what a true vacation should feel like.
