J. Scott Matejicka is a seasoned guitarist and educator with a rich musical history spanning over three decades. Renowned for his captivating performances as a concerto and recital soloist, he has enthralled audiences across the East Coast. Deeply rooted in Baltimore’s vibrant music scene, Matejicka has collaborated with the 1 East Guitar Quartet and immersed himself in the city’s rockabilly and punk communities. His performances are a unique blend of technical mastery and emotional depth, resonating with a diverse audience.
Educator and Mentor
In addition to performing, Matejicka has made significant contributions to music education. He dedicated 14 years to the Peabody Preparatory of Johns Hopkins University, where he served as Chair of the Guitar Department from 2005 to 2013. Moreover, his passion for teaching continues to inspire students in Baltimore and Washington, D.C., as he guides them in mastering electric, acoustic, bass, and classical guitar. Furthermore, Matejicka’s commitment to nurturing talent is evident in the success of his students, many of whom have embarked on their own musical careers.

To visually document Matejicka’s connection to Baltimore, I selected two iconic locations: Mount Vernon Park and the Enoch Pratt Library. These historic and beautiful sites provided the perfect backdrop to showcase the guitarist’s artistic spirit and the city’s rich cultural tapestry. Consequently, the images blend timeless architecture with Matejicka’s contemporary music, capturing the essence of both subject and location.
Behind the Lens
A versatile Canon EOS 7D camera served as the foundation for the shoot. For instance, the EF 11-24mm f/4L USM lens captured the grandeur of Mount Vernon Park and the intricate details of the Enoch Pratt Library. Meanwhile, the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens offered a versatile range for wide shots and close-up portraits. Lastly, the EF 35mm f/1.4L USM lens delivered sharp, expressive close-ups of Matejicka and his guitar. In combination, this equipment helped to create images that truly represent the musician and his inspiring journey.
