Last week, I picked up the B+W 82mm 099 Infrared Glass Filter for my Canon EOS 7D. The inspiration came from a conversation with my friend Dai, who mentioned his interest in IR photography. This sparked memories of the infrared film photography I was drawn to in high school. Although that interest faded over time, I’m now eager to explore this unique photographic style again using my infrared filter.
Initial Experiences and Adjustments with the Infrared Filter
Using the infrared filter has been both interesting and a little scary, but the process has been very fun. To make the effect better, I have been changing my 7D settings, including the white balance and picture style. Although I have not achieved the exact IR look I was aiming for — like the classic white foliage effect — the experience of revisiting familiar subjects through this new lens has been rewarding. This infrared filter has made me see the world in a new way. It has also made me love photography again. Each shot feels like a creative experiment, offering unexpected results that challenge my usual perspectives. The surreal quality of IR photography keeps me eager to continue exploring and improving with each session.
Looking Ahead to More Infrared Adventures
While my initial shots didn’t fully capture the traditional IR effect, the journey of experimenting with this infrared filter has been exciting and creatively fulfilling. I’m determined to refine my approach and look forward to capturing more IR images that push the boundaries of my creativity. My gear for this project includes the Canon EOS 7D and the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM lens, both of which have been excellent companions on this photographic adventure. With more practice, I hope to unlock the full potential of infrared photography and discover new, imaginative perspectives through this unique medium.
