Playing with Insta360 X5 while roaming New York City

Just got my hands on the Insta360 X5, and I’m testing it out in of New York City—and wow! This camera is seriously fun. There’s something exhilarating about capturing the energy of the city in a full 360-degree view–every direction tells a story.

The immersion is amazing. Being able to look back at footage and shift the perspective is like reliving a memory from every angle. It turns an ordinary walk down the street into a full-on cinematic experience. Plus, it captures reactions, surroundings, and spontaneity that traditional cameras often miss.

Shooting with the Insta360 X5

This is my first 360 camera, so I’m not here to compare specs with previous versions. But from a beginner’s point of view? It’s impressive. The camera is compact, feels well-built, and doesn’t scream “gearhead” when you take it out.

Some features that stood out to me right away:

  • FlowState Stabilization: Super steady footage even while walking.
  • Reframing tools: I can edit later and “point the camera” after the fact—a total game changer.
  • Voice control: I can start/stop recording hands-free, which was useful while navigating the city.
  • HDR video: Adds more dynamic contrast in challenging lighting like direct sun + shadows.

I started with simple walking tours and skyline views, and it really made me realize the storytelling potential of this format. Editing the footage is half the fun.

Editing Experience – Insta360 Studio vs Mobile App

While the phone app is convenient, especially for quick edits on the go, I found the Insta360 Studio on desktop way easier to use. The larger screen makes all the difference when you’re reframing, adjusting horizon lines, or scrubbing through footage.

The UI on the desktop version feels more professional and less cramped. I can preview shots in higher resolution, fine-tune the speed ramps, and export in higher quality without feeling limited by my phone’s capabilities.

End of the Day

After testing everything, I realized the real value wasn’t just in the gear—it was in how easily it let me create. The Insta360 ecosystem made content feel effortless. Whether I was capturing a hike, a music session, or just day-to-day life, I stopped overthinking shots and started enjoying the moment. That’s the win for me: tools that disappear into the background and let the story lead.
