I had an amazing time photographing the 5th annual John and Amy Mewhiney Cancer Foundation Benefit Show, also known as the JAM Session, at the Sidebar in Baltimore. This event focused on raising funds for lung cancer research and supporting patients. It was not only a night filled with fun raffles for a great cause but also a showcase of incredible local rock music. The performances were raw, powerful, and truly unforgettable.
This night was more than just a concert—it was a community coming together to fight a common cause. Every band brought their unique energy to the stage, and the crowd responded with enthusiasm, making the atmosphere electric.
The Sidebar provided an intimate setting that perfectly matched the intensity of the performances, making it a memorable night for everyone involved.
Sidebar: A Cultural Landmark in Baltimore
The Sidebar Tavern in Baltimore is more than just a music venue. It’s a cultural landmark that has helped the city’s entertainment community since 1998. This venue is hidden among the old buildings in downtown. It is known for its many live performances, including rock, punk and stand-up comedy. Over the years, Sidebar has hosted many local and visiting bands. This has made it a regular in Baltimore’s lively music scene. Its intimate setting and unpretentious vibe have endeared it to both artists and audiences, contributing significantly to the city’s cultural fabric.
Capturing the Energy of the Night
Capturing the energy and intricate details of the JAM Session required top-tier photography equipment, especially given the challenging low-light conditions of the venue. I relied on the Canon EOS 5D Mark III for its full-frame sensor and exceptional image quality, which were crucial in such a setting. To handle the low lighting, I used lenses with large apertures, like the EF 35mm f/1.4L USM, which allowed me to capture intimate close-ups of the performers with sharpness and clarity. For wide-angle shots of the crowd and stage, the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM lens was perfect, offering a broad perspective without sacrificing detail. Additionally, the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens helped me capture detailed shots from a distance, maintaining image stability and quality throughout the night. This combination of gear ensured that every moment of the event was documented with precision and clarity.

“His follow up and delivery afterwards was, unsurprisingly, excellent.”
We were extremely happy to have Jiho photograph our charity event. His communication before the event was excellent, and his experience behind the lens was on full display that night. He flowed through the crowd seamlessly, and caught every moment perfectly. His follow up and delivery afterwards was, unsurprisingly, excellent. We would gladly work with him in the future, and we wouldn’t hesitate to work with him again in the future.
