Baltimore’s unique charm shines through during the winter months, offering photographers an opportunity to document the city in a new light. From November to January, I went on foot with my Canon 5D Mark III and iPhone. I took pictures of Baltimore as it got colder. The streets, often quiet and covered in a light dusting of snow, provided a perfect backdrop for a winter-themed photo documentary.
The Art of a Photo Documentary
A photo documentary lets photographers tell a story through pictures. They capture not just the scenery, but also the feelings and moments that make up a place. Walking through Baltimore, I wanted to show the city’s personality in winter. I wanted to show the city’s buildings, people surviving the cold, and small details that might not be noticed in other seasons. Every shot is a piece of the larger narrative, showing Baltimore’s resilience and beauty during wintertime.
Unusual Encounters: A Rooftop Meeting
While wandering through the city, sometimes you stumble upon the most unexpected scenes. One such moment happened when I noticed a group of four people having a business meeting on a rooftop. The sight struck me as both odd and fascinating. There they were, bundled up against the cold, conducting serious business while surrounded by the casualness of the open sky. This moment perfectly embodied the essence of what a photo documentary seeks to capture—the blend of the ordinary with the extraordinary.
