When it rains in Baltimore, the city takes on a captivating beauty. The lights seem to glow differently. The streets feel more intimate, and there’s a unique charm that emerges only when the sky is clear. That’s why I love grabbing my camera and venturing out during a downpour. On this particular day, I joined Malcolm and his daughters as they explored the city. We visited famous places like the Inner Harbor, the Science Center, and Federal Hill. As part of their Moment series, I took pictures of their rainy day trip. This added a memorable part to their story.
The Joy of Shooting with the 35mm f/1.4
Using the 35mm f/1.4 lens on a rainy day in the city is a joy for any photographer. Its wide lens lets you see well in low light. This makes it great for capturing the soft, diffused light that comes from overcast skies. The shallow depth of field and beautiful bokeh it produces add a magical touch to each shot, isolating the subject while the city’s reflective surfaces create a mesmerizing background. This lens is especially good in places like Baltimore’s rainy streets, where every part of the city can be seen clearly.
Gear Used
To document this rainy day adventure in Baltimore, I relied on the following gear:
- Canon EOS 5D Mark III: A full-frame camera known for its exceptional image quality, especially in challenging lighting conditions.
- EF 35mm f/1.4L USM: A prime lens that excels in capturing sharp, detailed images with a beautiful background blur, perfect for the rainy cityscape.
This combination allowed me to capture the city’s reflective lights and the Majer family’s adventure in stunning detail, preserving the magic of their rainy day in Baltimore.
