Every engagement is special—but this one had a few plot twists, a golden-hour glow, and a secret plan that came together just in time.
This shoot began with a plan to meet Travis and Paola at Phipps Ocean Park on route A1A, a quiet beach spot just south of Palm Beach. We originally chose that location for its dunes, natural light, and wide coastal view—ideal for the kind of soft, cinematic shots I had envisioned. I arrived early to scout the area and frame out where I’d place myself.
As I neared Phipps, something shifted. The air grew still, the clouds deepened, and the wind carried an eerie silence. I felt it—rain was coming, and fast. I texted Travis: “We need to change location now.”
We decided to head south, traveling ahead of the storm. I asked Travis to drive slowly on so I could cut ahead. He acknowledged and drive on A1A at about 35 mph (56 km/h) while I jumped on I-95, racing down to scout a new spot and stay hidden. It was no longer just a shoot—it was now a coordinated mission.
Luckily–thank Heavens–we were spaced about four cars apart. Since this was a surprise engagement, I had to remain out of sight. Paola had no idea what was about to happen.
When we got to our new spot in Delray Beach, I parked discreetly and quickly got into position. We all walked toward the shore, spaced out just enough along the busy path that they didn’t notice me. As soon as we stepped onto the sand, everything was set. That’s when something unexpected happened: Travis began walking south—toward me.
A family of four nearby was enjoying the beach, full of laughter and movement. Thinking fast, I approached and asked if I could pretend to photograph them—just a little cover to stay hidden in plain sight. They were playful, full of energy, and happily agreed. What started as a simple ruse turned into an unexpected mini photo session. We shared laughs, a few quick portraits, and in the end, they helped me pull off the surprise without Paola suspecting a thing.
The Proposal
Then, it happened. Travis paused, turned to Paola, and dropped to one knee.
Her reaction was everything.
I could sense that she had no idea this was happening. As I zoomed in on their moment, it was clear—she was truly surprised. Travis embraced her with calm, loving energy, helping her feel present and safe in the middle of the big surprise.
And yes—this was happening. Her joy and realization unfolded frame by frame in front of the lens.
Sunset Light and Golden Hour Magic
That same cloud we escaped at Phipps followed us south, then drifted east over the Atlantic and leaving behind textured skies and incredible light. That’s one of the magical things about Florida—you can always count on a dramatic sunset.
As we transitioned into the photo shoot, I finally approached the couple and introduced myself—a quick hello and congratulations! From there, we jumped into capturing the joy of their engagement.
We walked along the beach, near the ocean, through sandy pathways—just enjoying the moment. The only thing I wish had been different? The sargassum seaweed. There’s been a noticeable increase along South Florida’s beaches, tied to climate change. Thankfully, Lightroom’s AI Remove Tool saved the day. It used to take forever to clone it all out by hand. Now, I can focus more on the story.
An Evening to Remember
After the shoot, we made our way to Paola’s house, where both families were waiting—her parents, his parents, everyone gathered to celebrate. There was joyful hugs and a small gift exchange. Travis and Paola had officially stepped into a new chapter—no longer just boyfriend and girlfriend, but fiancé and fiancée.
It was intimate, heartfelt, and deeply moving. To be welcomed by families I’d never met—and trusted to capture such a meaningful moment—was an honor.
Capturing the Full Story
Alongside the photography, I also captured video testimonials from Paola and Travis, their family, and friends. These candid words, laughter, and reflections brought even more depth to the story. It’s a format I’ve loved integrating into my work—there’s nothing like hearing the emotion directly.
B-Roll & Behind-the-Scenes Moments
Some of my favorite parts of the day weren’t even planned—they just happened in between frames. These are the little things that build the full memory—funny, awkward, completely human. I always say: the outtakes are just as sacred as the main story.
A Note to the Couple
Travis and Paola—thank you for this moment. For the trust, the flexibility, and the magic of your story. I hope these images bring you back to the breeze, the sun, the laughter—and the love that bloomed that evening.
Thank You to the Family at the Beach
A special thank you to the family of four on the beach who let me blend in with their moment so I could capture Travis and Paola’s big one. Your kindness, spontaneity, and good energy helped keep the surprise alive. Thank you for the laughter, the smiles—and that unforgettable mini shoot.
